Amanda's Grappling Corner
Updated Dec 26, 2002

Most of you know me from my professional wrestling peccadillos, but I also enjoy the occasional foray into the wonderful world of competitive submission wrestling or "grappling".

For those of you unfamiliar with this sport, think of amateur wrestling except the object is to make your opponent give up (or "tap out"). You cannot pin your opponent. Indeed some systems - including the currently popular Brazilian Ju Jitsu - have evolved techniques for fighting effectively from your back.

I have found that the challenges are somewhat similar in pro wrestling and grappling. I see both sports as being different species within the same genus. Many of the old time wrestlers I've met like Bob Bachlund, The Iron Sheik, and Tony Atlas all had amateur background before they turned pro. So with all of this in mind I hope that many of you who are kind enough to follow my adventures enjoy my little martial arts corner.
Fitness World Benchpress Meet: I won the women's heavyweight (170 lbs. and up) and the women's overall titles. (Dec 02)
Maine Grappling Tournament: Pictures from a submission wrestling tournament where I took first place in the women's heavyweight division despite going into the event with an injured foot. (Nov 01)
California Challenge: Six screenshots from a spirited competitive match with Kristie Etzold. There were a total of 14 submissions in this bout and we were both exhausted by the end. (Jun 00)
I'm Going Over: Eight screenshots from a competitive wrestling video I did with a small guy who didn't know much about grappling. I dominated him a little with technique, which I was just beginning to work on, but mainly through brute force. (Dec 00)
